the heat, the dirt, and the old time fun - our rally went off, had some hitchs (our first time pulling races together) and this event was not for the weak at heart with tempitures in the 100s...the only thing worse than dripping sweat is getting dirt stuck to it.for the attendees that had to leave early the day was probably disappointing - the races didn't get started until around 1, and our vendors had to battle the wind - but now for the ones that left early they will be even more disappointed after seeing our pictures, because this day turned out to be KICK ass.
pull start vintage minis started the races, the track was shortened for these bikes and it was pretty entertaining to see grown men racing on these little things and sliding out on the turns - I'm pretty sure the guy with the long gray beard was 3 sheets to the wind since I think every turn he wiped out and the fact that it didn't hurt him a bit, next time we will have to do sobriety checks prior to the line up.
the vintage moto cross bikes were great, lucky,gus, huber and brooklyn rode in full glory - but I think the first moto gus's tire went flat. there was a "where's waldo" guy in white overalls that halled ass... and Bryan Bird (modern rider) was stoked to ride mb's own #805 triumph racer on the track. (if you want a technical low down on the happenings of the races you will have to get it from mb)

the holigan class was fun to watch and had the full attention of all our attendees - just because it was insane to see a sidecar race against a scrambler and some big vintage moto cross bikes all on the same track, I was just waiting for an accident remembering in my head my plan of action and how I was going to run across the track in my corset, tight jeans and 3 inch wedge sandels to preform cpr. luckly I didn't have to do that and the only injury of the day was a guy that went down during practice on a mini bike that decided to take a jump that was not part of the track - broken arm and ribs I think, the elvis suit he was sporting didn't get ruined fortunatly...

we had a car and bike show - although I think most guys couldn't stick out the weather to get to the trophy awards show (trophy girl, rally spoke person, and flag girl this year was Abby) we had some cool bikes and an "interesting bus" place in our awards show. our flag girl's red lipstick, daisy dukes, cowboy hat and boots, and shimmering black hair must had been to much for her boyfriend to handle - he proposed to her today. now that is some amazing flagging capabilities!

and the pageant, my job - it was awesome the vintage trailer saved my girls from the dirt, and to have them walk out of it directly on to our cowboy make shift stage (all pallets) was perfect. each girl dazzled the audience with their favorite song and burlesque moves. some cutes girls and good tunes - I am still whistling the hook in "I Walk the Line" that Miss Bonnie Ville walked out to. In the end Miss Amy La Croux placed 1st (of course not with out our wacky mc making constent remarks about her constently remarkable giant boobs) 2nd place was the black haired bombsheel Jessica D. sporting a kill all hippys tank and lacey black panties, and third place was the classic beauty Symphony Rose. mb at the last minute bumped up the 2nd and 3rd place winners prizes to include cash (thanks to all of the support from our sponsors)... and in the end it was the best rally, pageant and scramble in hell on wheels history, including but not limited to the drunk guy + heckling + the Three Corman's stage vs. knife scare, the campout + 2 girls kicking the crap out of a creepy guy, and the burning of the stage at the end for our bonfire

His name is Jeff, but his customers call him Meatball, “polpetta” in Italian. He is the most renowned motorbike mechanic of the whole US West Coast and Brittown film is dedicated to his life. He told Riders about his relationship with Triumph, BSA, Norton…And what about Harleys? Never!

Jeff has got a wife, two children and everything that runs on two wheels, provided that it has an engine and is English. Money? “What I raise thanks to the motorbikes is enough, all the rest…I don’t need it”

He smiles, Jeff. His face is the one of who knows how to listen and his hands, dirty with sludge, grease, engine oil and wiped on the jeans and Norton shirt he’s wearing, speak for him. We’re in Anaheim, California, 40km south from Los Angeles. We’re in front of a wooden detached house in an American residential area, one of those that look like they have come out of a production line, as featureless as Jeff Tulinius’ garage, a 46 years old mechanic specialized in English motorbikes. Everybody on the West Coast knows him as Meatball, “polpetta”, one of those nicknames you are given when you’re young and then remain stuck on you forever.
Who comes here with a wreck Triumph, BSA or Norton knows he’s in the right place, a garage where disorder hides experience: bunches of exhausts of two-stroke engines that desert raids have worn out, a tangle of English street twins dating back to the 70s and two Ducatis supporting a platform with 20 other motorbikes. You watch him while he reconditions a cylinder bore or takes the primary drive gears off by heating them with a blowtorch and you understand that the man in front of you is not one of the many old-school-wanna-be mechanics, an improviser working on motorbikes full of history and style just to act tony, or someone who just rides the wave of two-wheel vintage fashion. Waves. Jeff rode those of the Pacific Ocean, at the nearby Venice Beach. As a boy, he was a surf champion and even before, at the age of 8, he used to ride his father’s motorbike, a Triumph T3 that today takes him round Orange County.
“There’s people who ride motorbikes in search of an identity” says Jeff sneering behind his sailor hat, his eyes staring at the connecting rod of a ’71 BSA. “I’ve been carrying engines inside since I was born, they’re friends of mine, fixing them is a like treating myself”. His illness is called passion and the medicine cannot be injected, but must be cultivated day after day. When running a garage on L.A. coast started to require too much money, Meatball decided to move to the suburbs with his wife Rose, a 26 years old nurse, and their two children. Himself, his family and his motorbikes. Everything that didn’t fit in the house ended up in his old car parked in the street. Just like the strollers and the kids toys left on the back seat, who knows since how much time, the first sign of his lifestyle.
Jeff didn’t get rich with English specials, as you get to speak about money he says: “What I raise thanks to the motorbikes is enough, all the rest…I don’t need it”. His name is world-famous though, thanks to the film Brittown. Directors Scott Di Lalla and Zack Coffman discovered an introverted, simple and frank guy, one that fix your motorbike even if you don’t know yet how to pay for the repair. No tattoos, long hair or piercings, just his lifestyle that gravitates around real motorbikes. It took the directors three months shooting in California to document the life of Jeff and of the friends of the No Gooders Motorcycle Club, who share with him the passion for 60s and 70s British motorcycles. Three months spent shooting in the desert like Steve McQueen, with an old Triumph on Cub Desert Sled, a track on which races took place in the 60s, when Enduro Bikes were called Scrambler and races seemed “trips to the country” compared to today’s performances. Shooting went on even at weekends at Rosamond’s Willow Spring Raceway with a Triumph modified for the flat track, wearing a T-shirt on the protectors and boots laced up with leather laces.
“During races we try to stick, as far as possible, to the way of riding of the time”, explains Jeff “what matters to us is having fun and the relationship with ours motorcycles, much more than the challenge with other riders”. That’s called style, Jeff. Style. When we point out that he’s got style to spare, he shrugs, takes a drag on his cigarette and says: “Style? Sounds good. But I’m just myself”. Indeed, he’s just himself. In his garage inspiration is not lacking, from the autographed poster of Gene Romero, one of the strongest US riders who, in 1975, won Daytona 200-Mile Race, to the mechanics handbooks, to the spare parts originally from the 70s and the guitars. Yes, there’s music too in Meatball’s life: he’s the front-man of the rockabilly Smiling Face Down band. Vintage-style rock’n’roll, of course.
His dream, he confesses after some hours spent with him, “is a tour in Italy, riding and performing live throughout the peninsula”. Some more talking, a beer and a hamburger. Then, to help digestion, he leaps into the saddle of a ’59 Triumph and starts to sideslip for 20 minutes before the photographer’s lens. Now we hope his dream may come true: Jeff must really be imported into Italy.

I'm puttin together a '71 Bonnie cafe and it needs somethin to put the gas in...go figure! I'm torn between a manx style alloy or triumph euro "breadbox" tank. The bike has an alloy solo seat which was hand hammered and wheeled by my close buddy Carpy (cb750cafe.com), so I figured the alloy fuel tank would be fitting. The frame is powdercoated a gloss olive green and I'm usin WWII era British roundel decals on the tank and elsewhere on the bike. Just curious as to if ya got somethin layin around that might fit my needs or know someone that could build a manx tank. I really enjoy reading what you fellas do. Here in the middle of Illinois, we are controlled by the weather (short riding season and COLD!) Having ridden BSAs since high school (1965) I am really tickled to se all of the interest in the older Brit bikes!!

Ride or drive your car or bike into the designated show areas at the event…
If it doesn’t run… don’t bother. Ugly and Unique are Encouraged.
We will have categories ranging from Purdiest, to Ugliest…

No pre-entry form is needed… no entry fee.

Judges will consist of Hell On Wheels personnel, Club Captains, and Honored Guests.

Trophies will be given out and a Bottle Of Whiskey with each Trophy.

Gypsy Run Style Camping:
Overnight camping is encouraged.

After the stage is shut down… we will have a Bon Fire and will have a Special presentation of Two Wheel Terrors II from the Hot Rod Havoc guys.

Camping spots for both motorhomes and tents will be available. See the organizers Booth at the event for a spot. The only amenities will be Porta Potties.

Alcohol:
No alcohol will be served by the track or the event organizers. Some clubs may be bringing beer and if you are really nice they might share… However, we encourage everyone to BYOB. And stay overnight at the track.

This Event will be filmed for upcoming Two Wheels Terrors project and a Documentary being put together by Meatball and Scott Curtiss

Clubs:
Clubs are welcome to participate. Any car or bike club that officially participates will be asked to donate one Customized bottle of Whiskey to be given out with trophies… and nominate one member to be a judge of either the car or bike show.

This year it will be bigger and better than ever. Building on the last 3 years of Rallies and shows… we have now expanded to a larger venue… and because we at Hell On Wheels really love racing. We are adding the Scramble to the mix. Yes, in addition to the insane line-up of events from years past, this year we will include actual motorbike racing… and just to ensure that everyone can have a good time and get home safely we have arranged it so everyone can camp out at the track… yeah sleep it off before heading home. Sort of a Gypsy run... party... and ride home...

We have had tons of interest and queries from all over the world about this year’s event and we are expecting upwards of 500 in attendance. At least 200 bikes and hot rods. 20 or so of the most beautiful classic style pin-up girls in So Cal. And 5 of the best underground bands in the country…

In order to afford this party we need the help of sponsors. So if you or anyone you know might be interested in suppoting this event... please let us know...

Support at any level will be appreciated. Sponsorships will go to help cover the cost of the event, provide prizes for the pageant and bikes and hot rod show and advertising.

We typically have about a dozen motorbike and car clubs join us for this event and we are looking forward to even more this year.

A few monthes back we had the pleasure of inviting Riders Magazine from Italy into the shop. We weren't really sure we would give them the photo documentation they were looking for....but we had fun having them follow us around with the camera anyway. Of course we took them to In n' Out for a famous CA hamburger and shake, and with all of that excitement MB got alittle crazy while test riding the bike he was working on that day. Took it out to the rock pit down the street and did some burn outs...luckly the owner Greg Kazen was forgiving. The pictures and article made it into the mag, we aren't really sure what the article says since it is in Italian, hopefully good stuff.
